Bio
By dminusadminBorn and raised in Princeton, Newfoundland, Dustin “D- Minus” Lawton found himself developing a passion for rap music from early in life. By the age of 22 D- Minus found himself living and working in Alberta where he began writing music and free-styling to any beat that flowed his way with influences of PAC, Onyx , Rakim, Cypress Hill, Dre, Wu Tang, R.A., A.O.T.P, BIGGY, Swollen Members, Classified, Jay Z to name a few; taking his creations to the recording studio three years later under the name “D- Minus” inspired by failing grades and as an “up yours” to those who wanted him to remain that way. Inspiration also came from Necro who turned out to be a selfish douchefag who has no appreciation for his fans; the very people who made him any sort of name at all and was dismissed as inspirational talent.
After creating his tracks, shaping his image and trying to gain connections, he found himself in a downward spiral of substance abuse and frenemies. Selling cocaine to make a living he began using, with that came addictions, fogged decisions and failed relationships. Friends he thought were there to help him and support him, he realized were only there to take advantage and girlfriends were no exception so drugs were his way of dealing with the harsh reality of the life he’d made for himself. Seeking a way out, D- Minus began to focus more on his music, his life and caring less about the toxicity in his life. He was able to control his addictions and began to clean up his life and get things under control.
After discovering underground rap and Metal, D- Minus was filled with a whole other level of inspiration and began to take rap far more seriously. Heavily influenced by true artists such as Ill Bill, Jedi Mind Tricks and Eminem, he began producing his own beats and has done collaborations with local, upcoming artist from all over Canada and New York such as Spesh K Antifrantic and Mindbender. Metal influences have come from some of the very best metal available including but not limited to Metallica, Pantera, Marilyn Manson, Judas Priest, Septic Flesh and the more underground sounds of Cradle of Filth, Kalmah, Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus, giving a select few of his tracks a glorious sense of darkness. He’s performed with Duke Buzzy in Peterborough, ON and performed at events such as United Flow for Unity in Toronto, ON, D- Minus was getting his name out there, doing what he could to put himself on the map.
Another move and another chapter as D- Minus set out to Vancouver, BC, once referred to as “the last stop” to experience Shambhala. While in BC he got some help from his friend Troy Gullage for his websites, performed at End of the Weak, and had the honor of performing next to Drastic (KOTD) Measures, Black Lion , Steps Necessary , Jules Zee, Speeches Beyond GDISS and many more. He also did tracks with Omen and Dizz and work with Graeme Collins and also got the chance to shoot the shit with Young Sin and Snak the Ripper while getting fucked up on tequila.
Since first arriving on the music scene at the age of 20, D- Minus has come a very long way with more recent accomplishments including a production company, CapitalMinus, which covers everything from beat production to video editing and a clothing line called DSPK. DOPESICK is a way of life and people will live it through the clothing. With many accomplishments under his belt and a relentless journey forward, his fans, followers and supporters eagerly await whatever D- Minus has in store for both the near and far future.
